Harbor Beach's Only Way Out Is Getting Fixed One Bridge at a Time

West Lake Drive Bridge Repair in Harbor Beach: Timelines and Replacement Plans

Harbor Beach residents rely on West Lake Drive as the sole access point connecting the community to Fort Lauderdale. A critical bridge repair on the span south of Mercedes Drive began April 29, 2026, with completion targeted for fall 2026 before full structural replacement occurs between 2028 and 2030.

Harbor Beach sits on water on three sides, and West Lake Drive is the only road that connects it to the rest of Fort Lauderdale. There is no second route in and no back way out through a neighboring street grid. Whatever happens to that road affects everyone who lives past the gate, and currently a repair crew is working on a bridge that opened in 1956 and has spent recent years posted for load restriction.

The bridge is the span south of Mercedes Drive, and city bridge inspection data rates its superstructure condition as "Serious," a step below "Critical" but past routine maintenance. Roughly 2,690 vehicles cross it on an average day as of 2023, with city projections estimating 3,228 daily crossings by 2042. The road carries increased traffic each year as the structure ages.

The Repair Underway Right Now

The current project began April 29, 2026, and the city public works division targeted completion for fall 2026. Crews installed a temporary support structure, repaired one half of the bridge underneath, and then moved the support over to complete the remaining side. One lane stays open throughout construction. Because specific structural work must happen at low tide, crews work evening and weekend shifts alongside standard weekday hours.

A Decade of Fixing One Span at a Time

In 2013, public reports identified failing bridges in Harbor Beach across three specific locations: South Ocean Drive near Mayan Lake Drive, West Lake Drive near Lucille Drive, and West Lake Drive near Mercedes Drive. The span between SE 14th Street and Mercedes Drive scored 24.7 out of 100 points in a 2011 inspection. Rather than replacing every bridge simultaneously, the city worked through them in sequence.

The previous phase ran from June 30, 2025 to early October 2025 on the span between SE 14th Street/Lucille Drive and SE 15th Street/Mercedes Drive. The 2026 project addresses the adjacent span between East Lake Drive and Mercedes Drive.

The Bigger Fix Is Still Years Away

Current repairs are interim maintenance solutions. The city has approved full replacement of three bridges along West Lake Drive, designated as structure numbers 865773, 865774, and 865771. That project, along with replacing the SE 7th Street bridge over Rio Cordova in Rio Vista, carries an estimated construction cost of $9.2 million for the West Lake Drive spans and $1.1 million for the Rio Vista span.

Construction on the three West Lake Drive replacements is scheduled to begin in fall 2028 and finish by summer 2030. The Rio Vista bridge replacement runs from fall 2026 through late 2027.

What's Open Along the Detour Route

The primary route out of Harbor Beach during traffic delays runs through the SE 17th Street corridor. Hula Kai Tiki Bar recently opened at 1075 SE 17th Street, bringing a two-story dining space serving pan-Asian dishes and tropical drinks near Harbor Beach's gate. It joins Boatyard, the established 285-seat waterfront restaurant at 1555 SE 17th Street.
